ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
B.S with honors, University of Houston, Kinesiology
Overview:
I come from a family with strong history in music, and music has played a vital role in my life and experience. All my life I have watched my parents, brothers, uncles, and aunts perform, whether simply at family gatherings or for larger venues. From age three I was exposed to musical performance through a few elementary piano lessons. At age 9 I began studying the violin, performing in small school groups and on my own. I continued to study classical violin until about 16, when I became highly involved in choir and theater. I was selected for the Texas All State Mixed Chorus three years in a row. I also sang professionally for St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Houston for three years. At about this time I also began teaching myself piano, and have continued my growth on the instrument to this day. I attended the University of Houston initially as a Vocal performance major with a music scholarship but had become burnt out from the rigors of professional classical music training and performance. Though I went on to pursue other studies, music has remained both a leading player in my life and the field in which I have the most raw talent and experience. Since then I have performed in several groups and as a solo act. I played fiddle for the Galveston based folk band "The Grog". I was the resident church pianist for Christ Presbyterian Church in Daphne, AL, as well as the Keyboardist and backup singer for the Daphne based classic rock band "Mid Life Crisis" for three years. I began self-studying the accordion in the summer of 2016 and have discovered a natural talent for it, as well as an unrivaled love for the sound it makes. I continue to play jazz and folk music with my accordion here in College Station, as well as provide keyboards and backup vocals for the local country group "Texas 105 Band".
EXPERIENCE
My experience as a teacher spans many subjects including not only music but also academics and physical education. I've worked as a gymnastics and motor skills instructor for children aged 3-5. I have been in charge of outreach programs through the Houston Food bank, traveling to various locations in the Houston area to give lessons on nutrition and physical fitness to children of all ages. I have also worked as a Math/Science tutor for High school students. My experience as a music teacher has been simply giving beginner lessons to friends on the violin, or giving others a few lessons on music theory and application in piano and accordion. I have a deep love for learning and progression, both in myself and in others, and so I enjoy even the tedious moments of a student's progression as a musician. As a self-taught musician, I know what it takes, in terms of discipline, practice, and study, to learn and excel at an instrument, and I enjoy passing what I have discovered on to others.
METHODS USED
As a teacher my goal is to build up a student's core knowledge and skills to create a confident performer who is competent in music. The student's level and goals determine what exactly I include in my lessons. I find a good music theory core is important not only for classical musicians but especially for those wishing to learn how to improvise and play by ear. For this reason I make it a little part of each lesson, with focus devoted to practical applications for the instrument being learned. When it comes to drills/exercises/scales/etc., I try to use challenging pieces to substitute for them as much as possible. This makes practice more enjoyable, and gives the student more pieces (as opposed to exercises) to play for family and friends while still building on their skills and keeping them challenged. A huge part of music is collaboration and performance with others, so I make playing along with others on various instruments a part of my teaching once the student is sufficiently skilled for it. My personal influence on the student's repertoire depends on the student and their goals. I enjoy working closely with my students to discover the kind of music they like and any specific songs they want to learn. I encourage students to always be thinking of new pieces and to bring them in to work on. I love teaching people the music that most interests them, and I prepare my students for whatever venues and performances that they choose to play, always encouraging them to get out and show off their talents.
LESSON STYLE
Learning an instrument is not simply about technique and skills. Music is an enormous part of our lives and culture, and an individual's decision and desire to step forward from the passive stance of a listener to the active crafting of music can impact and shape their identity and their life. As a teacher, I try to foster the same love for music in my students that I carry in my own soul. My style revolves around enjoyment and satisfaction in the music. You have to enjoy what you are playing, find the beauty in the music, in order to truly express feeling through your playing. A student should leave every lesson challenged, yet satisfied and thirsty for more.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
