Overview:
I hold a Bachelors of Arts in Flute Perfromance at Texas Southern University located in Houston,TX. I've had the opportunity to perform with many university ensembles on campus (many of which I've had the honor of serving as principal player). I've performed with many local ensembles throughout the city including the Gulf Coast Concert Band. I have also been featured on records with gospel artist Zacardi Cortez and jazz legend Joe Sample. I have been teaching privately for the last 6 years and I have found it to be a great experience!
EXPERIENCE
I have been playing the flute for about 13 years now and I've been teaching privately for about 6 years. I am currently in my 2nd year of teaching in public school. Over that time, I've met so many students young and old, many of them being beginners. That's right, I'll teach a student of ANY age! I specialize in performance coaching that involves preparing students for competitions and solo and ensemble festivals. The key to raising an excellent musician is providing them with as many positive resources as possible & I am willing to help those who want to be awesome. I am excited to be working with Musika and I'm ready to see some new talented faces!
METHODS USED
The first priority for me is to dully understand what each student and parent wants from the desire for private instruction. My teaching methods are tailored to each student's indidvidual needs and expectaions for the duration of lessons. I don't have a specific method book set, for I use multiple sources thoughout the teaching experience. Most of my students are middle and high school students. In that case, I work with them on whatever they may be playing in their respective school band programs. I often have printouts of certain materials to provide to the students right away to supplement their programs' agenda.
LESSON STYLE
The main objective that I personally strive for is to ensure that my students are properly recognized for their hard work. I've seen many instances when kids will stop participating in extracurricular activities due to lack of positive support from those they would expect it from. I believe that validation, especially from the parents, truly helps students maintain an interest in music. It helps them develop a personal drive to succeed not only in music, but in life. You're never too young (or old) to know the importance of self-validation!
