Overview:
I am a native of Valdosta, Georgia, where I attended Valdosta High School. I received my B.M.E. in Music Education from Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama, where I co-founded Steel Tuba/Euphonium Quartet. I received my M.M. in Euphonium Performance from The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. There I was a member of the award winning Alabama Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble and the Alabama Wind Ensemble. Since 2000 I have been traveling the southeast United States exploring my passion for music through performance, teaching, and research.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to 2002 when I became Graduate Assistant to Demondrea Thurman, at Alabama State University. While working on my MM at The University of Alabama, where I studied with J. Michael Dunn, I taught undergraduate tuba and euphonium majors. After graduating in 2005, I served as the professor of Lower Brass at Florida A&M University, where I was also Director of Lower Brass to the Marching 100, I taught a studio of 30+ students per semester. From 2008-2010 I served as adjunct Professor of Lower Brass at Alabama State University. There I taught music appreciation, averaged an 18 student studio, and also served as director of the lower brass choir. In 2012 I returned to Florida A&M to serve as professor of tuba and euphonium. I currently work with local bands and orchestras in the Orlando, FL area.
METHODS USED
I believe in approaching each student individually. Each student's ability and/or understanding, no matter the level, may very, sometime drastically. So I tend to each student's individual needs on a case-by-case basis. I use various methods such as the Arban's book for fundamentals, Bordogni vocalise for lyrical style and stamina, various solo repertoire, and many more depending on the student's level of skills and understanding.
LESSON STYLE
It is rewarding to see my students grow as individual musicians. I, along with each student, will set high yet realistic goals for their musical journey. Each student will take part in their progress through practice and/or research between lessons. I will tailor each lesson based on the students wants, likes, and need by first understanding the student as an individual.
