I am a teacher who enjoys helping people discover a passion for playing music! In 2013, I graduated with a Master of Science degree in Music Technology from Indiana University. In 2012, I graduated from the University of Indianapolis with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a concentration in Technology and Recording. I have performed at many places in Indianapolis, Kansas, and Florida with various types of groups, including jazz bands, jazz combos, wind ensembles, and orchestras. I have also had the wonderful opportunity to perform in Italy and Austria as a part of the University of Indianapolis Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
I have been teaching private lessons for over 8 years. Some of my students competed in state solo and ensemble competitions and received Gold and Silver awards. Other students have participated in recitals, music camps, and marching bands. Before I started giving lessons, I volunteered with a community group in Indiana called the Phillips Music Guild of Indianapolis. Through the Guild, I helped mentor students who were learning to play music. I have taught very young students and adults at various skill levels and am happy to work with any students in this wide age range. My favorite teaching moment is when a student starts to see how different aspects of music go together and their eyes light up!
For beginning woodwind students, I start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or whatever the student's school band book is. Once the student knows how to read music and can play enough notes, I like to introduce scales. This provides a good foundation for moving on to duets and solo pieces, which are more enjoyable to play. Once the student has finished the first Essential Elements book, I like to move on to the Rubank books. For beginning piano students, I start with books by Bastien, which I have in different levels, ranging from absolute beginner to intermediate. I also like to work on things my students want to learn, such as pop music, movie music, or even music for band class.
I like to demonstrate concepts by modeling so the student knows what they are supposed to sound and look like. I will sometimes play to give an example or send a link to a recording to help the student. I encourage students to go at their own pace. For example, if a student is playing band music that is very easy, I will assign them something else to work on to help them continue to advance. On the other hand, if a student is having trouble making a sound, we will continue to work on that and not get ahead of where the student is. I like to adjust my teaching style for each individual student to figure out how they learn the best!
Ms. Chelsea C was very polite, had a wealth of knowledge to help my son with his clarinet lessons. She was extremely flexible regarding scheduling and has been available to work around our family issues and schedules.
Chelsea is an excellent teacher and has been flexible with lesson times. I recently enrolled a second child for music lessons and continue to be very pleased.
We value Chelsea for the quality of her lessons, but also for the flexibility of her schedule. She has worked around family vacations, impromptu summer camps and the upcoming school year. Emily is better prepared to start middle school band this year due to flute lessons from Chelsea and we plan to continue the lessons for the foreseeable future.
Chelsea did a great job at our first lesson! She was patient and encouraging. She gave my daughter good suggestions on how she could improve and things to try in areas she was struggling. My daughter felt so much better after the lesson. We will continue to take lessons with Chelsea
My son has been taking lessons with Ms. Chelsea for about two years. She has been extremely flexible regarding scheduling and has been available to work around our family schedules. My son has improved considerably on the sax and we are quite impressed with his skill.
