Overview:
My name is Chelsey and I love sharing my love for music with students of all ages. I graduated with an MA in Music Theory and Composition in 2015 and a BM in Instrumental Music Performance in 2013 from LIU Post. I have been playing flute, saxophone and piano for as long as I can remember. At LIU Post, I had the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2012 and 2015, perform in Ireland and perform as soloist with the LIU Post Orchestra. I love working with students and having the opportunity to see a student grow and understand concepts that were challenging at one time. I currently teach general music at a Pre-K through eighth grade school, where I also direct the school's choir and bell choir.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching lessons after my freshman year of college in 2010 and have had students consistently since. I have worked with students from the very beginning stages to those at the college level. My students have successfully auditioned for CMEA festivals (Connecticut Music Educators Association) and NYSSMA festivals (New York State School Music Association). I believe that students learn in different ways. Due to this, my ability to easily relate to students and understand how they learn is one of my greatest assets. My goal is to help students grow and work to the best of their ability.
METHODS USED
For my beginning students, I generally start with the book their school teacher wants them to use, or I have students use the Yamaha book 1. If the student begins in middle school or high school, I like to use the Rubank books. I believe that working on solo repertoire is an important part of learning and performing, so I begin my students on solo repertoire as soon as possible. I choose solo works that are in the ability of the student, yet offer enough of a challenge to help the student learn and grow. For adult students, I learn what they would like to accomplish and what their goals are to create a plan to achieve those goals.
LESSON STYLE
I love seeing a student gain an understanding of a concept that had been challenging. In order to accomplish this "aha" moment, I try to learn how the student learns best (visual aids, explanations, listening examples) and use that to help the student. I use popular songs that the student knows to explain concepts that can be challenging. I use stickers for younger students to help mark progress and practice journals for older students to help see how much was accomplished. I never teach two students the same and tailor all my lessons to the student's needs and ability.

We couldn't be more pleased with Chelsey! She knows what to do to make playing the piano fun and gets the most out of each lesson. The attention she gives to our daughter's individual learning strengths really shows in the progress she is making.

Chelsey is a very patient instructor. She has super creative techniques in teaching. My daughter is sensitive and Chelsey is super intuitive and attuned to how my daughter feels during the lesson. I am very happy as a parent, and it is unbelievable how quickly my daughter is picking up the contents.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
