Bachelor Degree: Eastern Michigan University
Pricipal Saxophonist in EMU Symphonic Band
Hello! I am a driven, passionate, and adaptable music educator. I just graduated with my bachelors in K-12 music education from Eastern Michigan University. I have studied the saxophone as my primary instrument for over 10 years now. I have taught a various range of ages and abilities for saxophone, clarinet, piano, and more! I believe that every child deserves a quality music education. Music is such a special experience that helps people grow in multiple areas. I became a music teacher because I love seeing the progress in my students as musicians and people.
I have been teaching private lessons for five years now to students aged 8-18. I have also taught general music classes to 3 month-two year olds in an early childhood music class. My students have excelled through solos, ensembles, festivals, etc. I believe in consistency of instruction and positive reinforcement and criticism. I best serve my students by being adaptable to all of their needs. I am currently working with a student that has william's syndrome and we have a blast together. After being dropped by his last teacher, I now drive an hour away from my home every week to make sure he gets the education he deserves. I go out of my way to ensure that my students have a great time learning their instrument and I push them to reach their full potential and so they will meet their goals.
My methods are adaptable based on the student's previous or current instruction with private teachers or their school teachers. For all students I love to play along and model concepts for them. I involve a lot of kinesthetic movement based lessons along with visual and aural aids. I get to know the type of learner my student is and then plan my instruction to fit their learning style. I am a fan of etudes and short technical exercises as well as long tones for intermediate to advanced students. Once beginners have a good grasp on tone and fingerings, I add in etudes for them. All students will get to explore their wants and needs when it comes to their instrument. I enjoy working with all ages and love learning from the uniqueness of each of my students.
My teaching style is whatever fits best with the student. I am a high energy, silly, out of the box kind of teacher. I have no shame doing a silly dance to get my students engaged and moving! My main goal is for students to have fun and enjoy making music. My students will quickly learn to love every sound that they make because every note they produce is unique to them. There is NO other sound in the world that is identical to what every musician produces. Music is so unique and special and it is an absolute blessing to get to bring this into student's lives every day.
Ms. Chelsey was an excellent teacher for my son. He requires a very patient and adaptable teacher that meets his needs (he has ASD) and she was great for him. My son was ditched by his last teacher and Chelsey was fast to step up and make sure my son got back on track.
