Bachelor Degree: Idaho State University, Master Degree: New York University
Overview:
Hailing from Nigeria and now making waves in the vibrant music scene of New York City, I am Chidiebere Joseph Emmanuel, a percussionist whose beats resonate with cultural depth and artistic finesse. Under the tutelage of two esteemed Nigerian jazz icons, drummer Adewale Adeyemi and bass player Bright Gain, I honed my craft, gracing stages including the prestigious Lagos International Jazz Festival. My musical journey led me to Idaho State University, where I earned my Bachelor's degree in Commercial Music, broadening my horizons and enriching my repertoire. Immersed in the dynamic arts community, I served on the Board of the Pocatello Arts Council, nurturing my passion for both performance and advocacy. Currently, I am delving deeper into the nuances of jazz at New York University, pursuing my Master's degree in Jazz Studies under the mentorship of acclaimed drummer Ari Hoenig. My dedication to musical excellence and cultural exchange shines through in every performance, blending traditional rhythms with contemporary flair. Endorsed by industry leaders, I am proudly sponsored by Canopus Drums, Bosphorus Cymbals, and Salyers Percussion Drumsticks.
EXPERIENCE
I have been dedicated to teaching music for about a decade, beginning my journey in Nigeria where I initially taught people of all ages. During my undergraduate studies, I expanded my teaching repertoire to include private lessons, providing personalized instruction to young aspiring musicians as well as adult learners. This experience allowed me to develop a strong foundation in educational methods and student engagement, catering to a diverse range of learning needs and musical abilities. In addition to my work with individual students, I have also made significant contributions to higher education. As an adjunct instructor at New York University, I took on the responsibility of drafting a comprehensive curriculum for my courses. This role not only honed my skills in curriculum development but also deepened my understanding of academic standards and the importance of a well-rounded music education. My curriculum design focused on integrating practical musicianship with theoretical knowledge, ensuring that students receive a balanced and enriching educational experience. Throughout my teaching career, I have continuously sought to inspire and challenge my students, fostering their growth as musicians and individuals. My extensive teaching experience, spanning from early education to university-level instruction, has equipped me with a versatile and adaptive approach to music education, always aiming to bring out the best in each student.
METHODS USED
My teaching philosophy is rooted in fostering both technical proficiency and creative expression. To achieve this, I employ a combination of established techniques and personalized approaches: Using the George L. Stone stick control book as a foundational tool, I promote limb independence and improve technical skills. This classic method helps students develop precise control and coordination, essential for any percussionist. Understanding that each student is unique, I create customized exercises that cater to their individual strengths and areas for improvement. These personalized exercises not only address technical challenges but also encourage creativity and self-expression, allowing students to develop their distinctive musical voices. By combining these methods, I aim to provide a balanced and comprehensive music education that nurtures both the technical abilities and artistic individuality of my students.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is aimed at celebrating each milestone my students achieve while simultaneously ensuring their progress to the next one. I believe in recognizing and rewarding their efforts, which builds confidence and motivation. To facilitate this, I often have my students work towards a specific project or song. This approach allows them to see tangible progress and realize how far they’ve come as musicians. Using the George L.
