I have been studying piano since the age of 11 as a student of Sofya Zamanskaya of the Kiev Conservatory, Julia Hawkins of the New England Conservatory and the international concert pianist Baekyu Kim, who I am currently taking master classes with. I have been teaching piano for more than 10 years, which I love doing as an extremely patient and passionate instructor. I am also the director of the music group La Piano and instruct students who preform regularly throughout the North Shore area. In addition to teaching and performing, I am a well published translator and creative writer. My Chinese translations include What Every Pianist Needs to Know About the Body by Thomas Mark, State of Wonder by Ann Patchett and many more. I hold a Master's degree in Media Arts from Emerson College.
I started teaching my son since he was 5 years old and have helped him win several piano competitions throughout his teenage years. For the past ten years or so, I have been teaching at private music schools, community music schools and my home studio. With every new student, I begin the first lesson by understanding their past experiences of leaning music, what interests them the most in music and what they expect to achieve through my lessons. Then I provide a customized lesson plan for the student with well-mixed techniques, theories and performance preparations. I adjust the plan according to the student's progress to assist them in achieving both satisfaction and achievement while, of course, nurturing their love for music.
I typically start with the Piano Adventures series with my beginner students who are children. I also introduce songs they are familiar with alongside seasonal or festival music to make the lessons more engaging and boost their interest in learning. For intermediate students, I add materials such as exercises from Hanon or Czerny to develop stronger technique. I pair these with music by various composers so that, while building the foundation of piano playing, my students explore different styles of music. For my adult beginner students, the Alfred's Basic Adult All-in-One Course is often my preferred starting material, but it always depends on the individual. Like I always say to them, "Let's chat and find out what you like and how I can help!"
I can best describe my musical teaching style as relaxing, attentive, encouraging and professional. As a mother myself, I have a deep understanding of how a child develops through the different stages of life and how they learn the best. I believe every student has their own method and speed of learning and I am here to teach and encourage them through this beautiful journey of music. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing my students learning happily, enjoying music and developing a lifelong love of music.
