I've been playing guitar for 15 years and I always strive to learn something new everyday. I started out taking private lessons and was instantly hooked. I enjoy sharing my knowledge of music with others and exposing students to new techniques and musical concepts.Every individual has his or her own goals that they want to accomplish on the guitar. Some want to learn it all (technique, music theory, etc.) while others would be happy if they could simply learn to play one of their favorite songs. I won't push you to learn anything that isn't essential to your main goals. I want you to enjoy picking up your instrument everyday!
I've been teaching now for 3 years and it has been a welcomed alternative to my former day job of working in a corporate environment in New York City. I started informally teaching my friends as far back as 10 years ago and it has evolved into a serious passion of mine. I have taught a wide range of students ranging from 10 to 50 years of age with an eclectic array of learning styles and musical preferences. I enjoy the mentoring role of guiding and inspiring a student to improve on their instruments while learning songs that they actually like.
My goal as a teacher is to avoid any type of dogmatic "one size fits all" curriculum. I always want to know what music the student enjoys and build my lesson plans based on their tastes. Chords can be physically challenging for beginners so I like to work with single-note melodies early on so that the student isn't quickly discouraged. Learning chords becomes the medium-term goal. As for the long-term, I will then use specific songs as examples for how music theory works in the context of their favorite bands. I am always prepared to adjust my lesson plans based on the students progress and overall comfort zone.
I have a very patient and laid back personality which I think benefits most students. The last thing a student wants to feel is pressure from their teacher to perform up to the teacher's standards. Everyone has a different idea of success and this also translates in the world of music. Some want to become world-class virtuosos, while others want to simply enjoy playing music for their personal fulfillment. Neither path is right or wrong and I will work with all of my students to maximize their particular goals.
