-I am currently persuing a diploma for acoustic guitar teaching through the University of West London.
Overview:
I have been playing guitar for 19 years and have been teaching it privately for 2 years. I continue to study daily and I am versed in acoustic guitar, bass guitar, electric guitar and some piano experience. I back my lessons with music theory so the student has a better grasp on the instrument and how it pertains to music. I also teach reading sheet music as well as musical composition analysis, so not only to be able to play it but also to understand each piece and their nuisances. I am also an active member of the registry of guitar tutors through the University of West London.
EXPERIENCE
I was raised into a family of music and heard classic/southern rock, blues, bluegrass and pop hits performed live at family get togethers throughout my youth. I played Euphonium in a concert setting through high school as well as the Baritone in marching band. My native instrument is the electric guitar but I have studied heavily with acoustic material as well as bass guitar. I have had the opportunity to teach a few different age groups as well and it inspires me to continue teaching no matter the age group.
METHODS USED
For younger students I try to focus on simpler concepts and to revisit lessons to help solidfy the material until they feel comfortable progressing. Familiarity with material before it's necessary for application I feel is also a good approach. I currently study using the guidance of University of West London's curriculum for practical knowledge as well as theory and my lessons are geared towards mastering the instrument and not just learning songs. I also firmly believe in the practice of printing out sheet music of every piece to have a more intimate understanding of the material unless of course it's original content.
LESSON STYLE
Watching a student successfully progress through lesson form is an unparallel feeling that inspires and guides me to continue. I have given lessons to age groups ranging from 9 years old to 70+ and feel that it's important to first identify where the student is at and how to build on what they already know. I also see that setting small goals for all age groups to show progression through positive reinforcement is a beneficial tool not only for the student but also for the instructor. During my lessons I will frequently accompany material with music theory in order to help the student build their active memory as well as to increase their improvisational capacity.
