Bachelors Degree in Music Industry Studies (Classical and Jazz Percussion Performance)
Overview:
I graduated from CSUN and studied classical percussion, Latin percussion and jazz drumset. Outside of school I have performed in various rock bands including a tribute to the Doors called Strange Days. I was a member of that band for about 5 years. I have worked on cruise ships and travelled the world playing all styles of music.
The level if drumming that i teach is at the highest level. My teaching abilities are paralleled with my performance ability. My students usually advance very quickly and are performing within a year of starting lessons with me at the beginning stages. For more advanced students, I take their drumming to the next level, sometimes to a level they thought that they weren’t capable of obtaining.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for over 15 years and I have been performing and continue to study and learn on my instrument and other instruments for over 20 years. I can play jazz bebop, heavy metal, punk rock, Latin Salsa music, classic rock, country music or anything you want to learn!
My experience as a teacher and performer make it easy for the students to learn. Most of all, studying with me is fun and exciting. I usually don’t have to tell my students to practice because they are so inspired at the end if each lesson that they can’t wait to “shed” or put into practice what they have just learned!
METHODS USED
I teach, technique, reading, coordination, and improvisation pretty much in that order. They are like stepping stones to really being able to play. You need the basic technique to get your hands moving, then you need to read to understand rhythms and counting etc, then you need coordination if you are playing drumset, then you can start to create something that is yours! I also play piano and can teach some theory on the side. A good way to get into this is by playing a mallet instrument like vibraphone which has a similar technique as drumming.
LESSON STYLE
I always like to challenge my students but I always make sure that I build on their strengths so that they build confidence and never forget that music is supposed to be fun! I will find out what their goals are and what kind of music they are into and I will do my best to get the student interested in learning and being creative!
