Overview:
Hi there! My name is Chris Sullivan. I am a professional musician and educator. I recently graduated from the University of Southern California with a doctoral degree in Jazz Studies and Music Education. I am a professor at two universities on the west coast - The California Jazz Conservatory and the Glendale Community College. I am a patient and methodical teacher who loves to inspire and foster the interests of my students. I have been playing the saxophone for 20+ years and have had the good fortune to study with some of my jazz heroes. These lessons have not only taught me countless valuable lessons about the instrument and improvisation, but have also shown me how to teach. Spending time with many teachers with various teaching styles has helped me identify the qualities in a teacher that I find most effective, allowing me to incorporate them into my own teaching.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching lessons while in high school. I first taught elementary and middle school students, eventually progressing to my high school peers. My primary goal with younger students is to inspire and develop their own interest in music. Consistent practice is much easier to accomplish when the student wants to improve on his/her own, rather than viewing practice as another homework assignment. I have been teaching for 15+ years, evolving significantly both as a saxophonist and teacher. With each lesson, I hope to leave students feeling motivated and excited about music. It can take time before a student realizes the joy of playing his/her instrument. I try to get to that point as quickly as possible by making lessons fun, highly interactive, and encouraging. When possible, I encourage and often escort students to local music venues to experience live performances. This is a great tool to motivate and inspire as well as open dialogue about the joys of music.
METHODS USED
With beginners, I focus on developing sound fundamentals. It's important to avoid any bad habits and beginning students are lucky in that they have the opportunity to establish proper technique from the very start. As students progress, I use books such as the Universal Method and Rubanks Duets to learn to read notes and understand rhythms. Duets are an amazing tool as they hold students responsible for their individual part, while still functioning as a supportive and interactive activity. As students become more advanced, I introduce music theory and cover basic improvisation. If students have any particular interests, we work on them while continuing to improve technique, sound, sight-reading, ear training, improvisation, and all the other fundamental skills needed to play at a high level.
LESSON STYLE
I love to see my students get excited about music! I try to ignite the flame and get them to develop an interest of their own. Music should be a fun and positive part of our lives. While it's important to have fun, I also make sure students are gaining a solid foundation in the technical facility of the instrument. The sooner we can navigate the instrument without limitations, the sooner we can focus on the music itself! I like to incorporate duets, popular music, ear training, notation, and spontaneity in lessons.

Chris is the best! He's patient, fun, and conveys music theory in a way that my ten year can grasp easily.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
