I am an avid music educator and performer. I am originally from Austin, TX, but moved to Colorado in order to pursue a masters degree in performance and pedagogy at the University of Colorado Boulder. I have performed throughout Colorado as a saxophonist, clarinetist and flutist. I love listening to all kinds of music including jazz, classical, folk and funk. As an educator, I have given several clinics and masterclasses in Texas and Colorado. Additionally, I have presented lectures multiple times at the annual Colorado Music Educators Association Conference.
I began teaching privately in 2009 in Austin, TX. There I grew a full studio of saxophonists and clarinetists. In addition to private teaching, I coached several chamber music ensembles at various schools throughout the city. I moved to Colorado to study education at CU Boulder. There I had the privilege of working with such educators as Dr. Margaret Berg, Dr. David Rickels, and Professor Tom Myer. As well, I received my Suzuki certification in flute from Dr. David Gerry. Teaching has always been a joy and honor for me. I absolutely love the opportunity I have to work with students to help them realize their goals and become fine musicians.
I have studied several approaches to teaching including Orff, Montessori, and Suzuki. I love to seek out new ways to effectively instruct my students. In music learning, I believe that listening is of utmost importance. One must internalize and interact with the music they hear so that they may develop a concept for what they would like to play. From there, students work with me to allow their musical voice to come through their instrument. We work on tone, technique, reading, improvisation, etc. As a music educator, my most important task is to help my students build an enjoyable and meaningful relationship with music, which they may share with others.
My approach to teaching is very interactive. I seek to provide my students with many different was to experience music including singing, playing, listening and analyzing. In this way, my students may make lasting connections with music and find success in many different areas of study. I, as well, strive to be the best example I can be for my students so that they may see musical possibilities which may not be presented to them otherwise. In lessons, I often demonstrate for my students what I would like them to do, and then guide them through the execution of the task. Furthermore, I believe parental involvement is crucial to creating an encompassing environment for learning and invite parents to be present for all lessons. As a team teacher, parent and student, we may provide a rich learning experience for all involved.
