Bachelor of Laws - Graduated with honors - July 2013
Hi! I moved to Los Angeles from Australia this year to further explore my love of music, performing, teaching and law! I have played the drums for 25 years and have been teaching for 15 (as an instrumental teacher and a classroom music teacher). In Australia I completed Bachelor of Laws, Graduate Diploma in Education and Bachelor of Music (Majoring in Jazz Drums) degrees. I am currently enrolled at the USC Gould School of Law, where I am completing a Master of Laws with a certificate in Entertainment Law.I have performed in a variety of bands ranging from rock, funk, jazz, latin and was also in a drum corps for 4 years. From 2007 - 2013, I performed at Australia's premier cabaret theatre Dracula's on the Gold Coast, performing 300 shows a year to 600 people a night - Watch the video for some of the show highlights!
I have taught the drums in a variety of settings for 15 years. In Australia I worked for the South Australian Government in the Instrumental Music Service for 3 years. I provided group drum lessons to students ranging from elementary to senior high school age with a total of 40 lessons each week, at 10 different schools to over 100 students! While in this role, I also coordinated ensembles and concert bands and also established a music program at a juvenile detention centre. For two years I was a classroom music/relief teacher at a variety of elementary, junior high and senior high schools in Australia. I have also taught drums privately (usually 15 students per week) since January 2000 from my home studio or from various music schools.
Learning the drums should be a fun and rewarding experience! I believe that learning to play different styles, playing along with a metronome/song and being able to read music are essential for all drummers. I ask students what style of music/bands they like and incorporate this into lessons. I break the lessons down into 3 sections: The first is where we warm up and play rudiments and technique exercises. Reading exercises - This is where we explore different drum beats, fills, hand/feet coordination exercises and different styles of music. Playing along to music - We work on a particular song that the student has chosen.
Students progress with their playing when they are enjoying lessons, and practice more when they are being taught material they are interested in! I provide a relaxed teaching environment and understanding that each student is different, I structure each lesson to meet their needs.
