Overview:
My name is Chris, and I have been playing trumpet for over twenty years. I grew up in the TX public schools and was a two time TMEA All-State Musician. I hold three degrees in music from accredited universities: DMA at UGA, MM at UT-Austin, BM at NDSU. I enjoy teaching and helping others, and have a patient, kind approach to working with people. Music is a wonderful gift that we can all share in, and I am happy to pass on what I have gained from my musical experiences. A great deal of my experience is in classical/"legit" playing, but I am fluent in performing jazz and pop/commercial styles.
EXPERIENCE
How did I start teaching? I began working with local high school kids while doing my undergraduate degree in music performance. What types of students have I worked with? All kinds and levels. From complete beginners to college music majors. What is my typical process for working with a new student? Evaluate where they are at in their musical development and then determine the best course of study. What do I enjoy about this work? Teaching and working with people is fulfilling. One can learn, adjust, and grow a lot no matter what side of the education relationship they are on. Music is fun and great to share with others.
METHODS USED
For beginner students, I often use the Essential Elements series, or a similar book. Work on fundamentals should be regular. Some of the books I like to use for this are: Clarke, Schlossberg, Bai Lin, Irons, Stamp, and more. Solos and etude books are important to work out of as well. Early etude books include Getchell and Small, and later etude books include Bousquet, Longinotti, Brandt, and Charlier. The Arban's book is also something trumpeters and brass players should be familiar with. There are a wealth of exercises, melodies/etudes, and solos in the Arban book that build up important skills and technique.
LESSON STYLE
I strive to have a positive and friendly relationship with students. Respect of eachother is also important. I teach each student uniquely and do not stick to a "cookie cutter" approach. Everyone has unique physiology and strengths and weaknesses, so each person should be taught according to their specific characteristics. I also try to explain playing processes and ideas clearly to ensure comprehension. I often use analogies, comparisons, and visuals to make teaching concepts more clear. The teacher and student have a dual relationship. The student learns from the teacher, and the teacher can become more effective and knowledgeable through the experiences with the student.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
