2002-2003 - Burke High School Jazz Band Outstanding Soloist Award
2004 - National Christian Fine Arts Festival Award of Merit in Percussion Performance
Overview:
I have been playing drums and percussion for almost 20 years and my love and passion for playing and teaching shows in myself and the students I've worked with. In 2011, I graduated from Missouri Western State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. Percussion was my main instrument. In the past 15 years, I've had the pleasure of performing with various types of bands in venues and competitions from all over the United States, winning many awards and critical praise for my work as a musician.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience goes back 12 years ago when I began teaching private lessons from my own private home studio. During my high school days, I also served as a student teacher for local summer band camps as a percussion and drum set instructor. One of the most important things I strive for is to have my students keep a consistent practice schedule and have fun playing the drums so that they can maintain interest in learning more music styles and be prepared for various musical occasions. To my students, I would encourage them to achieve their own goals and to perform in many shows as possible, as well as get into composing and work on trying to express themselves in their own way. I'm willing to work with students of all ages and to help them reach whatever goals they have!
METHODS USED
With my beginning students, I would start them off with a method book that would teach them the basic fundamentals of playing the drum set. I have many books, and I recommend certain books based on what the student wants to learn. Once they master the fundamentals, I would introduce them to solos and charts for performance practice. For adults, I would base my lessons on their interests, keep my students engaged in their lessons, and have fun in the process.
LESSON STYLE
As I have said before, I strive to see my students develop a great interest in music! Nothing makes me happier than to see my students succeed. For each student, it is important for them to learn at their own pace and not struggle if they get stuck o r confused on certain topics. All lessons will have goals set for the students. In order for my students to learn more, I find out what inpires them and base my lessons not only on my expectations of them, but also on helping them learn something that they want to learn too. Mostly, I am more interested in the student's goals than my own.
