I was born and raised in Houston, TX and I received a Bachelor's degree in music education from The University of Texas at San Antonio and an M.M. in voice performance from Indiana University. During my time in San Antonio, I was a semi-finalist and finalist at NATS competitions. I also performed in productions of Madame Butterfly, Il Trovatore, Pirates of Penzance, Honk!, Suor Angelica, Working, The Magic Flute, A Brief History of Root Vegetables, The Pied Piper of Hamelin and The Secret Garden. Some featured roles include portraying Phyllis in Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe, Despina in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, and Susanna in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. In the spring of 2009, I was a featured soloist for Charpentier's Midnight Mass at the UTSA Masterwork Concert, and again in 2010 for Handel's Messiah. In 2013, I performed as the soprano soloist at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Haydn's 'Lord Nelson' Mass, Pergolesi's 'Stabat Mater', and Poulenc's 'Gloria'. I have taught voice at The Musical Arts Center of San Antonio and at the Stone Oak Youth Theatre and Dance Company. Making music and nurturing music in others brings my life purpose. I strive to cultivate the unique voice of each of my students.
I received my bachelors in music education and began teaching privately during that time. I taught in my home studio and at The Musical Arts Center of San Antonio, and at The Stone Oak Youth Theatre and Dance Co. I have worked with students of all ages and musical backgrounds. I strive to balance technical skills with creative and artistic skills. I like to combine several styles in order to engage students and keep lessons fresh and interesting. I aim to help my students define and work toward their musical goals.
For students who are young children, I like to start working on fundamental musical and singing concepts, including posture, breath management, pitch matching, music literacy, and expression. I work with each student to find songs which are appropriate for their voice, and songs they are excited about working on. For adult students, I aim to find out what the student's goals are and use my knowledge and resources to help them achieve those goals. When searching for appropriate repertoire, I often refer to Barbara Doscher's "From Studio to Stage". Most importantly, I aim to keep my students vocally healthy and mentally engaged in their lessons.
Witnessing the musical and personal growth in a student is endlessly rewarding! My approach to teaching is to give my students clear and obtainable goals at each lesson, so that they will have the tools they need to succeed. I also strive to discern the specific learning style of my students so that I may cater the lessons specifically to the individual. I am always so thrilled to be able to introduce students to a song/genre/composer that they are really excited about! I want my students to become well-rounded musicians, who can read, prepare, and perform music confidently and artistically.
