I have been playing trombone since I was 10 years old and I haven't stopped since. I am involved in various groups throughout the SF Bay Area and I have experience in playing many different styles of music ranging from classical, R&B, salsa, Latin Jazz, Jazz, rock, and many more. I have been teaching for about 3 years and I have been teaching at San Jose State University as a Jazz Big Band instructor. I have toured Europe and have played with some of the finest musicians in the area. I love music and I find that it is very important to pass on the knowledge that was given to me to future generations.
I have been teaching music for 8 years now. My experience includes wind ensembles, jazz orchestras, jazz combos, and chamber groups. I currently hold a position at Chabot Community as the Low Brass Instructor and Jazz Trombone Instructor. I teach all ages ranging from elementary school all the way up to the collegiate level. I currently work for notable organizations such as the Stanford Jazz Workshop where I mentor various junior high to high school aged students who are part of an all-star auction based ensemble.
For all students my primary focus is tone and sound production and going from there I usually have beginning students start on the standard of excellence books, these books usually go hand in hand all the way up to the end of junior high school For more advanced students I have them use the Arban's Method for Trombone/Euphonium, Melodius Etudes by Rochut, and any solo or ensemble piece which fits their current level. Also in these current times I believe it is important for students to be aware of and know how to use a D.A.W. (Digital Audio Workstation) or recording software as it will not only aid them in music but also other aspects of school whether it be preparing a online video presentation or sending recordings to All State Band.
My teaching style is meant to cater to each students specific needs but above all else is having an understanding of what a brass musician should sound like. Many times young students only hear computerized recordings or recordings from their method books and they have not concept of what the instrument should truly sound like. The use of technology is something that I am a big fan of and resources such as YouTube is a great place to hear these recordings. I believe in a balance of being stern as well as understanding. Some of the most effective music teachers I've ever had never raised their voice but laid it out plainly if what I was doing was not up to their standard and that is something that I try to implement in my teaching.
