Hey there! So my name is Christian, I am a 23 year old musician from Anchorage, Alaska! Music has been life since I was 9 years old. I wanted to be in a band so badly that I decided to learn all the instruments I could as well as produce my own music. I have been playing shows in the Phoenix area since I was 14 including Warped Tour, The Marquee Theatre and so many more venues around the area. I have been lucky enough to travel the country playing music and even playing Avery Fisher Hall NY. I have also been lucky enough to work with quite a few local acts producing their music.
I started teaching when I first got my drivers license in order to maintain an income that was related to music. I quickly learned that I was quite decent at explaining concepts and connecting with students on different levels. When I was 19 I started working at the School Of Rock where I taught group classes, 1 on 1, and helped put shows on based on curriculum that I was given by the school. However, I did not stop at just sharing knowledge. One of my students named Recker Eans was interested in playing shows at 6 years old so I taught his parents to manage a social media account for him and to go play out at places such as First Friday on roosevelt row. He quickly gained traction and has now been on Fox News, BBC, and a couple other local news programs. The extra mile is what counts!
Every student learns a different way and I always take the first lesson to evaluate what the student is passionate about. Some students want to get straight to playing songs and some want to learn sheet music first. I am comfortable with starting anyway they need. If the student starts to get bored after a few lessons I try and bring in new toys related to the instrument such as a new kind of cymbal or a slide guitar to try and spark some inspiration again! I am a fan of pushing the boundaries when it comes to music so after a student reaches a certain level I always try and show them a new concept or a new band or anything of the sort to expand the understanding of the instrument!
I feel I explained a good amount of my teaching style in the last column. I really like to go with what the student will benefit from the most, not necessarily what is the cookie cutter "next step" I learned to play by trying things a couple levels above me and I loved it. I know not all students are the same, and sometimes the parents input is a big factor depending on if they are musicians themselves! I am very encouraging while at the same time in it to push and progress the student. Having fun with something to work for is my goal!
