I am a professional saxophonist/flutist in central Florida who gigs over 200+ dates a year. I freelance with original bands, wedding and corporate groups. I play in jazz, funk, R&B, reggae, soul, rock, songwriter, classical and world music styles. I received my A.A. in Music Performance at Valencia College in Orlando (2012) before becoming the music tutor there for one school year from 2012-2013. I then studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and moved back to Florida. As of 2017, I relocated from Winter Park to Lakeland. I've taught privately and at schools for both young and adult students for many years during this time.
I began teaching during my college days instructing saxophone at ASM studios in Avalon instructing school level students. At the same time I began instructing privately teaching a few adult students. This where my teaching began! After graduating at the music department, the Dean of Music recommended me for the music tutoring position at Valencia College and I taught under that position for one full school year. Woodwinds Instructor Feb 2017 - Present Beats & Tunes School of Music I teach saxophone, flute and clarinet to elementary through high school level students. www.beatsandtunes.com Music Tutor Aug 2012 - Jul 2013 Valencia College I solely tutored all levels of music theory, ear training, sight singing and class piano for 3 semesters after I graduated Valencia's music program at their east campus in Winter Park for one school year. Saxophone Instructor May 2012 - Dec 2012 ASM Studios I taught 1/2 hour and hour lessons for beginners up to high school students at their former studio in Avalon Park.
During the initial lesson, I determine what the student is interested in learning the best approach & pace to help them achieve their goals. While I have recommend materials to varying levels of students, every lesson approach is different. With all my students, I believe keeping them engaged and excited at what they are doing is most important. I've found even the simple act and writing out a favorite song and learning through that can give wonderful benefits, gaining new tools without realizing. I cover various styles of performance, fundamentals, technique, improvisation, music theory and more; all the while making it fun for them in what they wish to expand on.
Over the years, I've learned that every single student learns differently in addition to going at their own pace. Anyone at any age CAN learn music! I've found that presenting multiple solutions to varying problems gives the students the best chance to succeed and it's not that someone cannot learn, they just haven't been presented with an explanation they can understand and clicks for them. I teach for each student individually and to their strengths, not what has worked for others. I try to offer the most comfortable approach while aspiring the student to take what they've learned to practice.
We've so enjoyed having Christian teach our 8-year-old son. Christian makes a point to integrate musical numbers that are interesting to him - like the themes to Jurassic Park and Sponge Bob! My son adores him and loves their time together. We look forward to a long relationship with Christian!
