I enjoy working with students of all ages and abilities to help them discover their own creativity. My pathway as a music educator began after college and graduate work in flute performance when I worked with a youth orchestra and taught flute lessons for the first time. These experiences inspired me to move from Maine to Ohio to obtain a teaching license and a Master’s in music education. At Ohio State, my focus was in band, general music, and teaching students with special needs. After graduating, I taught elementary band and general music for 9 years before returning to graduate school in music where I taught college students. More recently, I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with a band for seniors. I am so happy to be teaching private lessons again and welcome students of all ages and skill levels.
For over 25 years, I have taught group and private music lessons in public schools, studios, colleges, pre-schools and seniors. I have a graduate degree in music where I studied teacher research, global music, community arts, and students with special needs. I started my music studies in flute and I teach flute lessons for any playing level. If a student is 3rd grade or younger, I offer the recorder as an introductory instrument to all wind instruments. As I was a band teacher, I can teach beginning clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, percussion, ukulele, and guitar. Global community music has always been an interest and I am pleased to offer frame drum lessons as well. Being a general music teacher and having worked with parents and caregivers with their young children, I also teach songs and movement activities that will enhance their child’s learning in motor, cognitive, and music skills.
During the first lesson, my student and I will talk about playing goals and learning styles. If the student is a child, we will use a beginning methods book that will align with the student’s music program at school. For adults, I have some resources that will meet their learning style. All students will explore music they like best to create a song collection that they will learn how to play. For advanced students, our goals will support learning to complement their music program and meet state requirements for solo festivals. For parents who want to learn more about songs to share with their children, I have a curriculum of songs that I will share.
I enjoy collaborating with my students to achieve their musical goals in a positive way. I encourage my students to find their own voice and adapt lessons to meet their own needs. With a personalized music learning program, I can create attainable steps towards achievement that are developmentally appropriate for each student. In addition, I want to make learning fun so each lesson is specialized to students’ interests. My hope is to inspire my students to be independent musicians, to play their instruments with joy, and to be open to the ongoing development of their own creativity.
