A native of Seattle, Christine began her musical studies as a classically-trained trumpet player. Moving to Chicago and collaborating with jazz colleagues led her to pursuing a master’s degree in vocal jazz. She was accepted into one of the nation’s leading jazz institutions, the University of North Texas. There she focused on her new passion for singing, honing her skills in piano, songwriting, arranging, and improvisation.
Since completing her master’s, Christine has enjoyed teaching piano, voice, trumpet, and theory to students of all ages. Her greatest passion is helping students find their personal connection to music, and helping them develop the technique and skills for self-expression. Whether through accompanying, facilitating original composition, arranging pop music, or using traditional literature, Christine leads her students to their goals in practical, attainable ways, by instilling creative and effective practice habits.
I have been teaching private lessons for 7 years part-time, and have been consistently teaching students full time for the last 3 and half years. I have taught at the prestigious Dallas School of Music, in Dallas, TX, and now am excited to join the Musika team. I have a strong foundation in classical and non-classical genres, so I've enjoyed teaching students of all skills levels, from 4 year old piano students, to 70 year old voice students, with many others in between.
Learning music (and the necessary skills to facilitate that music) that each individual student is passionate has been the focus of my teaching style. I love helping students play music they never though they'd be able to play, find other styles they love, and even compose new music. Broadening musical horizons and discovering new music seems to be the best motivator for students continue to hone their craft to be the best it can be.
Since I have so many ages and levels of students, I customize lessons to fit each student. Through feedback from the student (and sometimes with the help of parents) we figure out together what the students musical goal is. These evolve over time of course, but focusing on playing a certain song, learning scales, composing original music, gaining performing confidence (among other goals) are what I base lesson plans off of. Through my own arrangements of popular songs that I do for each students levels, engaging books, games, theory workbooks, and even recordings of my own piano playing for vocalists to sing along to, or pianists to listen to for guidance, no two lessons are the same, but all are engaging, effective and goal-oriented!
Those lightbulb moments for students drive what I do. I love working hard with students to accomplish musical goals, pushing them beyond what they thought they were capable of. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for the student at each lesson, taking small steps to achieve larger goals. I tailor each lesson to the student, using fun, creative methods to keep each student making creative, engaged and fun music! Through recordings, fun books, individually tailored arrangements, Spotify playlists and video tutorial, I keep each lesson engaging and goal-focused.
