I love music as an art form, as well as from an analytical standpoint. My goal is to create powerful THINKERS who use the medium of music to push the boundaries of their understanding. I began my musical journey at the age of 8 where I studied cornet playing under K.C. Hughes. It was during these lessons that my passion for learning new styles developed. In the 9th grade I ended my time as a trumpet student, and began playing tuba. I began taking lessons from Mr. Brian Dobbins at the University of Oklahoma, and studied on becoming a better chamber musician as well as a soloist.
I started my teaching career as a low brass tech for Putnam City West High School (my Alma Mater). Through teaching my former peers, I was able to understand the best ways to connect with students. I have now been a brass coordinator and specialist for the past 7 years using my techniques to build strong brass sections. I began my private instruction experience into my sophomore year of high school. I assist my students in creating a more resonant sound in their playing, as well as being EXTREMELY flexible in their playing.
For my beginners, we focus heavily on creating familiarity with the horn by fostering an environment of healthy habits. Our primary concern with beginners is being comfortable enough with the horn to be i complete control of the demands asked at this level. For older beginners, I am interested in what drew them to exploring instrumental music. I find that these students are often inspired by and event, or a particular musician. With these beginners, the root instruction is the same, we develop the confidence in controlling the horn in the situations demanded from the music. We then explore the art-form of music in which they would like to be stronger in.
I love to watch my students become better versions of themselves through the medium of music. I never want my students to be satisfied with reaching a destination on their goal charts. I want my students to become so infatuated with the journey, that they will seek to continue to look for new experiences to explore. I create this environment by keeping lessons diverse and dynamic. I make each student compile a list of goals for themselves, 3 big goals, 5 goals the lead to each of the 3 big goals, 10 goals to lead to each of the 5 goals, and finally, daily goals that will help us accomplish the 10 goals.
