2016- Teacher of the Year
I'm a passionate and energetic teacher who loves working with students to achieve their goals. I graduated in 2007 with a BA in music. I have performed all over the country with different ensembles. I've played with the St Louis Big Band, The Orlando Jazz combo and several traveling ensembles. I have taught in public schools since 2010. I started private instructions in 2016. During that time I have taught over 200 students of various ages. I believe in passing on knowledge so we all can achieve.
My teaching experience goes back to childhood. My father was a music educator and he installed upon me a love for sharing knowledge. This love grew in college where I trained with some of the top musical educators in the country. They showed me how to appreciate the art of learning. I found to become an amazing teacher you must be an amazing student. I play both modern and classical styles. I am also well versed in traditional and popular music. My students are encouraged to perform in recitals and join bands to boast confidence. I am always excited to work with students of all ages.
I believe in individualized learning. So each student will receive their own plan for their progression. Some materials I recommend for students are the rubank book for beginner. It is very important for students to grasp the fundamentals. For intermediate students, we would progress on a track and focus on what they had for goals. For advanced students we could use anything from method books to cds to ear training and transposition to bring out the best in the learner. No matter the level, I believe that fun and encouragement are essential in the process.
I don't believe there is nothing is better than having a student who has achieved a goal. So it is so important for me that my student progress at a rate that is fun, yet challenging. I believe goals should be realistic and tangible. We should discuss plans together on what kind of player they want to be. Then I tailor their lessons to them. I follow seven principles in my lessons. Activity, expectations, cooperation, interaction, diversity, and responsibility. These principles make learning a journey together which is enjoyable for both student and teacher.
