Bachelor Degree: Kean College of New Jersey
With over 30 years of experience touring and performing, I enjoy sharing concepts and methods of study that have helped me throughout my career. I graduated in 1993 from Kean University with a Bachelor of Management Science degree and a minor in music. Performing around the world with a variety of artists has given me the opportunity to perform at the JVC Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz Festival and the North Sea Jazz Festival to name a few. Recently in 2021, I had the mind-blowing experience of being an understudy in David Byrne's American Utopia on Broadway.
Along with being a freelance drummer, I started teaching private drum lessons at an after school program at the Trinity School in NYC from 2010 until 2017. Later on that year I started teaching at another after school program at the Village School in NYC until 2018. It was both challenging and yet rewarding to keep a certain level of engagement due to the fact that the lessons were scheduled after the student's full day academic obligations. I really enjoyed noticing the level of excitement once the student began to understand and adapt to concepts presented in the lesson.
The one book I use for my students is Ted Reed's "Progressive Steps to Syncopation For The Modern Drummer". I use this book for my own benefit on a daily basis. Its interpretation and application is limited only by the student's or instructor's imagination. This book is such a great resource for assisting the student in learning basic reading skills. Once the student becomes familiar with recognizing certain rhythmic sequences, It enables them to study and learn from other publications with an increased level of facility.
For me, witnessing the "ah-hah" moment in a student's face is priceless. It means that a certain concept or idea has been understood by the student. I use the first lesson to find out what the student is inspired by and what aspect of their playing they wish to improve on depending on their age and skill level. Once I find out what inspires them, I'll be better informed as how to keep them inspired and moving towards certain goals. Illustrating the importance of reading, counting aloud, repetition and goal setting are all a part of my teaching style.
