I am passionate about teaching and exploring the infinite possibilities that only have to be discovered by each person. I been studying and playing the guitar for 39 years, and sincerely believe that every person has the innate ability to communicate through music, no matter what level of skill. I treat every time I play the guitar as if it were the first time, and every time, I discover something that helps me to forge my own unique path on the journey, and overcoming the obstacles that inevitably present themselves on the journey.
My teaching experience Began in 1986, when my own private teacher began giving me his younger beginning students to coach as his popularity and demand increased. In 1994, I relocated to Charlotte NC and worked as a Theater and concert lighting rigger, and in 1998 attended Luthiers International Guitar Repair and Building school and went to work as a full-time Luthier, serving the Charlotte Metro area's finest musicians and teaching 8 apprenticed who all ended up in the business. Later I relocated To my hometown in New York and opened My current business "Guitar Lessons Jamestown"
I teach the student to maintain an open mind of a beginner, even if they are advanced students. I create personal programs for each different student based on their temperament, their interests, and the reasons they want to play guitar. For materials, I always begin with positioning and releaseing tension with simple exercises that resonate with the student's interests. Many times I will create exercises to target a specific weakness or difficulty, or take generic exercises and tutorials and make them into something more interesting that approaches the student's while targeting the bigger goal.
I Use a geometric learning model that takes the student first to learning the concept physically on the guitar. Then, as soon as they have a handle on the concept, I move Immediately to taking the raw concept into interesting examples that are in the styles that they like so they can experience it in a setting that they enjoy. Following that phase, I move to applying the concept into the common playing playing situations that would arise in any particular scenario in their chosen music. Finally, we integrate that skill into the rest of their playing to take it from isolated concept into a unified tool to use in their music.
