I am a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I have over 25 years of professional performance experience playing many varied styles. I furthered my music education at The Collective School of Music in New York City. I studied with some of the world's top drum and percussion instructors. My music experience has given me the opportunity to perform on cruise ships, club dates, festivals, private corporate events, and share the stage with world-class performers. I bring a wealth of real world playing experience, and I offer students my personal insight on the role of the working drummer.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began in 2001, during an after school program. I facilitated a drum circle and taught lessons to kids from ages 8 to 15 years old. This lead to several parents of the students requesting private drum lessons. I have been teaching privately in student's homes over the last 15 years. I find that defining the student’s goals, and centering the lesson around those goals keeps the individual inspired to progress forward. I communicate with each student to be sure he or she is enjoying what is being taught, and I modify the lesson when it is necessary.
METHODS USED
I believe a strong working knowledge of rudiments is fundamental to establishing good hand technique. I create arrangements combining rudiments to promote memorization and musicality. In addition, I teach four way coordination exercises, to develop bass drum consistency and promote general coordination skills. Students will also be introduced to different types of drum fills that progress into more challenging combinations using both hands and feet. Once a basic foundation in technique is established the student will be introduced to new music styles using pre-recorded play along tracks.
LESSON STYLE
For me, the biggest thrill as a teacher comes from watching the enthusiasm on the face of my student who is having fun during their lesson. Creating a positive environment, where the student can learn at a pace that will suit their needs, experience, and goals is one of my highest priorities. Providing each student with a step-by-step curriculum that will give them the necessary skills to develop into a proficient musician is key to keeping the student motivated. I encourage my student to learn ways to work things out for themselves that will enable them to be more independent and a much more able drummer as a result.
