I’m a person that lives and breathes music who is profoundly passionate about working with students to make their musical goals become a reality, and spread the love and understanding that is music. I have no formal education, however I room and play with an individual with a bachelors in music from Ithaca College. Performing up and down the east coast from New York To Florida I have picked up many useful tips and tricks for getting any sound you want from your guitar. I have a home studio equipped with 3 different guitar amps, a bass amp, drum set, and mic, also volume is never a problem! Being a musician I believe is one of the most rewarding life decisions I’ve ever made and I hope that reverberates in my teaching.
I began teaching small private lessons 6 years ago to 2 or 3 students part time in college at Spartanburg Community College. I encourage frequent practice on a regular schedule for all my students, seeing progress helps maintain enjoyment and develop passion for your instrument. I find that introductions into a variety of styles can really go far in developing your own unique sound! Music for me is all about having fun and letting your personality shine through the music you play, if it’s not fun then I’m doing something wrong. I encourage my students to use their creative potential by participating in events such as open mics, playing in front of a crowd can be very frightening at first but open mics give you freedom to relax and play among people who love music as much as my students and I. I’m always looking for new students of all ages, I’ve said it so many times to so many people, “You’re never too old to learn an instrument”.
For my fresh starter students who are children, I make sure they are aware of the best chords for beginners, then teach them how to comfortably move between them, this helps lay the fundamental foundation for guitar. For my adults I first and foremost get to know their musical interest, who their favorite players are. I then based on experience level will guide my instruction to suit my students needs and maintain fun engaging lessons! I never try to teach faster than a student can handle (information overload), however I have seen my students start playing songs within 2 lessons.
I love seeing that spark that people get in their eye when they pick up a song they love, or get over a plateau. I’ve been able to help my students by learning what inspires them. Then I help them reach realistic goals for their skill. By providing a relaxed atmosphere students can let go of the stress of learning and have fun with it instead. Progression comes naturally with time and by setting personal goals and celebrating accomplishments, encourages the desire to go farther. Above all and most importantly it’s gotta be fun!
