1993 - Utah State University Scholarship 1992- Superior plus rating at State Solo Ensemble
Overview:
I play 3 different instruments. I originally started out on the flute. I played the flute during high shool and college. I studied under Karen , and Leslie Timmons. While I was at college, I became interested in Music Therapy. As part of the curriculum for Music Therapy, I also studied guitar and piano. I have worked as a music therapist and as a music teacher for many years. I have played in marching bands, orchestras, and symphonic bands. Currently, I enjoy teaching my own children as well as other students music.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught guitar, piano, and flute for 30 years. The most important part of teaching is helping students to feel proud of their accomplishments and to enjoy music. I like to show my student''s performances through texting videos to their families as well as live concerts and recitals. I enjoy performing regularly as well. I have also worked as a music therapist in many different settings with a variety of different populations. I love the power of music. It is so powerful and uplifting. I'm happy to share it with you!
METHODS USED
For guitar- I studied under Mike Christensen at Utah States University. I use his guitar books that he has written. For piano- I use Alfred''s piano books. They are very well written and are geared for success! For flute- I start with Suzuki and then the sky is the limit! I like playing music theory games with kids. It is more enjoyable to learn this when it is a game. I encourage students to listen to the current pieces we are working on, either on CD or the internet. I also take notes of when community performances and events are happening and pass this information on to students.
LESSON STYLE
I encourage my students to practice smart instead of long. This is especially important for young students. I teach my students to self-evaluate their own playing. When difficult areas are recognized, this is where the practicing focus should be. Above all, music should be enjoyable! Hard work disguised as FUN is my goal. I am great at giving positive feedback. I enjoy celebrating success. I feel that it is important to let the student set the pace and then encourage from there. I also want students to not just play music, I will help students understand music.
