Overview:
Music is the most beautiful thing in my life, and I love sharing music with others by teaching and performing. I received my Bachelors and Masters degree from Taiwan where I grew up, and I came to the US and received my Graduate Performance Diploma from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in 2011 and my Doctor of Musical Arts from the Catholic University of America in 2017. I have performed in the US, Taiwan, the Netherlands, and Japan. I've worked with many world class musicians. I believe I can bring different experience to students by being a performer.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching private lessons when I was in college. During my masters program, I also taught chorus. I have taught private lessons for more than 15 years since I first started. I teach all different levels from beginners to advanced levels, and I have also taught student between the ages of 4 and 80. Classical music for me is the foundation which can help students with many techniques. Using techniques rooted in Classical music can enable the student to be able to sing, play or even compose other style of music. I have found that combining the style that the student loves and classical music will motivate them and enable them to be more productive.
METHODS USED
For my vocal students, I start with vocal exercises every lesson and allow them learn to vocal techniques through different vocal exercises. Then I work with my students on the repertoire that they are interested in or repertoire that can help them practice their weak spots. For my piano students, I use many different series (Alfred's, Faber, or some classic repertoire) depending on their level and age. For all students, I will also include music theory when I teach because the students will have a stronger foundation with all of these components, which will enable them to learn better, faster and even by their own. I like to teach them "how to fish" instead of "giving them the fish." When they have an upcoming performance, I will help them not only to prepare the repertoire and but also tricks to be better prepared for the performance so they can be confident, enjoy it, and excel at it!
LESSON STYLE
I believe making music fun can keep students motivated and improve their skills. When you love music, you are more motivated to improve. I also believe music is based on a lot of techniques. In order to express your feeling through music and have more fun, you will need to practice to mature the technique. Practice makes perfect!!! I believe that everyone is unique. I encourage my students, but insist that they need to learn something new every lesson so they can get closer to their goals. I help my students at their own pace to achieve their goals and enjoy music.
