I love anything to do with music. I could be playing, or someone else could be playing, I truely enjoy music. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation. This means that I use reacreation as therapy for people with disabilities. I used music in a lot of my activities. I am in school now for a Master's in Special Education. I found when working with the special needs population, music has had such a positive impact on them. I currently teach GED classes.. to help my students learn I teach my students to make up songs to better learn the material. I also teach 4th grade Sunday School at my church.
I have been playing clarinet since 1993.I began in middle school, then high school, then college and now in the Mobile Pops. Once I picked up the Clarinet I never put it down. I have played the music at a local theater for Camelot the musical. I am asked to play at various local churches. I have learned over the years that music is more than just notes on a page, it is a way of expressing yourself through music. I love seeing others get excited about learning to play an instrument.
For beginning students I focus on the basic skills, how to hold the clarinet, how the ambrochure should be, how to breathe, and learn the basic notes and fingerings of a scale. For the more advanced students I will work on putting complete pieces together, teaching them the different types of music, and allow them to practice on more complex skills.
I love to see students learn to love music. When I first meet the student I do a quick assessment(ask about 5 questions) to see what the student may already know. After the assessment I work on the skills the student needs to work on. I always give positive feedback. For instance "you got this right, and you are doing well at it, lets focus on this skill now."
