Colleen is a classically trained pianist who began piano at the age of 6. Her love of music began early and led her to develop her talent and rise the love of competitive performance. She has competed on behalf of her former music studio, as well as state wide competitions in her home state Missouri. Colleen has her Bachelors in Psychology and a Masters in Human Resource Management. She has been performing for over 20 years and has 15 years of private lesson instruction experience. She believes that commitment and discipline are necessary to learn the fundamentals. After that, your soul gets to dance!
My teaching experience dates back to my high school years. My piano instructor at the time appreciated my gifts and allowed me to assist with teaching beginner students. I continued to teach throughout my college years and still enjoy teaching today. I encourage regular practice and a consistent schedule. I find that consistency helps with progress and with the development of a passion for making music. I encourage my students to enter competitions and recitals so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn.
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Alfred’s Basic Piano Library method and theory books. Ideally, a new song is assigned every week and the student will practice daily. During lessons we will review the piece that the student has practiced, I will provide feedback, and we will move forward to a new skill. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
It is important for my students to realize that music can be fun, but it is also a discipline. Repetition and mastery of the fundamentals is necessary and at times can be frustrating, no matter how advanced you are. Be patient with the process and with yourself. Once you gain the fundamentals, your soul gets to dance! Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music. Each student progresses at his or her own pace. It is important to set realistic goals depending upon each individuals level of dedication.
