BA, Lewis and Clark College, English; emphasis on Music
I'm a pssionate musician and music teacher. I enjoy sharing my passion with students. I spend much of my time composing and teaching. I graduated from Lewis and Clark College in 2012 with a major in English and a heavy emphasis on music. I have studied African drumming, electronic music, classical music and jazz. I am well versed in hip hop as well. I have stayed tru to my roots and focused on mostly acoustic music, but my range transfers over to electric as well. I have played in several ensembles and with friends. Most recently I spent a semester teaching music in rural Oregon. I play piano, guitar, banjo and drums. I can teach all of these as well.
I have been teaching private piano lesson over eight years. I taught music fundamentals in the classroom this past year as well as after school lessons in piano, drums and percussion, guitar, and trumpet.
I use the Suzuki method which is an ear training method that trains the students to play familiar songs without having to read music. I teach them to read music afterwords. Much of my teaching method revolves around improvisation and experimentation. I use these techniques to get a feel for my students and then personalize the lessons to what suits their particular needs.
My teaching style is improvisational in nature. I focus on creative compositions. In contrast, I present traditional music and learning. I juxtapose the two into a new style of teaching. I mix the old with the new, and thereby create my own style. Much as in the fashion of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do with my intention on music education.
