I have a BA in Music/Music History from the University of Washington
I teach not only how to play the chosen instrument, but also about its history and its role across musical styles. Music is fun, and while hard work and practice are important and essential, so is enjoyment of music and enjoyment of one's instrument. I also strive to include music related field trips such as to opera dress rehearsals, to music related sites such as the EMP or to other local performances. Lessons can be held in the student's home or in my studio.
I have been teaching music privately since 2005, as well as acting as musical coach for Solo and Ensemble contests.
For wind instruments, I use the Rubank method books for exercises and whatever band method book is used in the student's school.
I teach not only how to play the instrument proficiently, but how to play it musically. Techniques and proficiency are taught along side musicianship, expression and appreciation for all musical styles. Students are also assigned a Question of the Week and a Listening Assignment to enhance their knowledge of their instrument, its function in music, and about music as a whole.
Keeps students interested balancing between 2 instruments and music history.
