Overview:
Music is my passion, the guitar is my instrument. I taught myself through books, videos, mentors, loop pedals, HOURS and HOURS of practice, and 8+ years of live performance and improvisation throughout the 12+ years of being a guitarist. Because I learned on my own, I remember the speed bumps and learning curves in the beginning. With no formal training to fall back on, I learned to use my ear very well and after the basic satisfaction of learning some of my favorite riffs, decided to seriously learn how and why it all worked. I then studied music theory so I could write better music. It cleared up the missing links from my "self taught" days and set the pace for me as a musician. I joined a local cover band, soon formed it into an original project, and through the transformation realized I was writing the music, and teaching my bandmates theory that in turn, made us a great jam band and gave me the freedom to always know where I am on the fretboard. That was years ago. I taught myself and others quicker and more effectively than any school curriculum would have, and now I want to direct my time and knowledge towards struggling musicians. Whether you're just starting out or maybe just need some loose ends tied up with you're theory, or are wanting to dive into songwriting, I can help you, and I can make it fun.
EXPERIENCE
In my experience, the love to play outweighs the need to learn. If you're not having fun you'll quit. Plain and simple. I've actually never charged anyone for lessons. In college, anytime someone close asked for lessons I was excited because I just wanted to share my passion with others. Over the years I've been mainly focused on learning, writing, and putting together successful projects. Along the way I've taught neighbors, friends and family, kids, bandmates and soon, my daughter. I guess my love for playing/teaching music outweighed my desire for an extra paycheck at the time, which I was making playing bars and weddings on the weekend. Despite the fact that I wasn't charging for my lessons, I noticed the "students" were coming back for a different reason. It was because they were having fun. They were learning fast because I showed them ways to enjoy the beginning stages where, let's face it, nobody's good. Everytime they hit a learning curve, it was one I had already conquered and could easily explain. Several of those students are now full-time musicians, both bassists and guitarists. We still keep in touch. I love teaching in general, and I love absolutely everything about teaching music, but my favourite reward is watching a student progress to a level of understanding that leaves them capable enough to teach themselves. When all the pieces are in place.
METHODS USED
For children, I draw influence from the organization of the Suzuki method, while still maintaining the emphasis on fun. (Learning TV theme songs, etc) Fundamentals are introduced with memorable examples tailored to the students musical interests. For all other levels of experience, I encourage the student to share with me what exactly it is that they want to learn or need help with. If the student has no idea, I will take over and decide what is missing from the students repetoire, and find the most effective way of tackling these new skills while maintaining fun. (EMPHASIS ON FUN)
LESSON STYLE
Each student is different, and therefore requires their own personal curriculum. The first questions from teacher to students should always be, "What is it that makes you want to play", "What kind of music interests you the most", and "What do you hope to accomplish musically". Some people only want to learn a little, others want to go all the way. By asking these questions, one can understand what drives the student to play, and establish a personalized fun and effective curriculum. My style of teaching is focused on kindling the flame that ignited the interest in the first place, and fanning it into a fiery passion for honing the craft that is musicianship. When the student progresses to an intermediate level, or in the event that they're already there, I will direct more attention towards improvisation, which targets the students imagination, improves ear training, and expands the students vocabulary of chord shapes and scale patterns. FUN and PROGRESS are the main goals. Nothing beats watching a student improvise a solo that impresses you and most importantly themselves.
