Butch's career spans over 20 years of featured performance and recordings by the likes of Jaco Pastorius, Lenny Kravitz, Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and Sting. Born in St Louis, Missouri, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Music from Webster University. Soon after graduating, he relocated to New York City, where he established a relationship with the great instrumentalist and composer Jaco Pastorius (featured on Pastorius’ recordings “Punk Jazz” and “NYC Jam” and featured live from 1983-1986). Then (as they say), the rest is history. He continued on to perform with a “Who’s Who” in music entertainment including The Temptations (1986), Thomas Dolby (1988), Dave Valentin (1988) and Lenny Kravitz (1989). His ambidextrous florid jazz style placed him comfortably in the company of an eclectic roster including “The College Boyz”, “The Cult”, Tyrone Davis (1990) and the rock group “Living Colour” (1991). He’s received a number of video credits including Lenny Kravitz’ hit “It Aint Over ‘Til It’s Over”, Queen Latifah’s “How Do I Love Thee " Sting’s “You Still Touch Me”. It was during this time that the directors of the hit FOX Network detective series “New York Undercover” called him to appear with a number of featured guests with the shows' "Natalie's" segment including Al Jarreau, Al Green, Mavis Stables, Mary J. Blige, and many others. Through a referral, the call came from superstar singer/guitarist Sting, where he toured extensively in 1996-97. It was through his appearances with Sting that he was placed in demand by yet another hierarchy of stars e.g. James Taylor, Elton John, Diana Ross and a feature spot on Aretha Franklin’s 1998 hit song “A Rose Is Still A Rose”(U.K. version) written and produced by singer/songwriter Lauryn Hill. His current single debut "Caribbean Woman" is his latest smash hit on the Spectra Jazz Label.
I have been teaching saxophone and flute lessons since 1984. I have taught in schools, colleges, and privately. I teach all levels from beginners to professionals. Learning an instrument should be a fun experience in the process of development. I also teach ages from seven to ninety years of age. I have typed all over the world as well as being a professional recording and touring musician. I have been in the music industry for forty years. I am still professionally active in the music industry.
My teaching methods varies from different styles . I teach music theory, jazz improvisation, musical concepts for all instruments, as well as saxophone and flute lessons . I prefer to teach lessons for one hour, this gives the students a full spectrum of their weekly assignments. I first began teaching the student basic fundamental which includes breathing, fingering, basic rhythms and notes .Once the student has developed these things, I develop a repertoire for the student, The first half of the lesson deals with technical exercises in the second half deals with creative aspects of music such as theory and improvisation.
My teaching styles vary from student to student. It is impossible to teach every student the same way. Some students learn methodically and some learn holistically. The teacher should be similar to a blade of grass which blows in the wind. One has to be flexible and not rigid nor Stiff.Generally speaking, I have a very relaxed approach in my teaching style which makes the student more comfortable at his or her lessons. I encourage the student to learn at their own pace and not to think that they are in a race to complete an assignment. It is very important to teach quality lessons instead of quantity.
He is a great teacher. What good luck to have found such a good teacher. My son loves his lessons and loves to practice. Mr Butch T. explains things very simply and it is easy for my son who is seven years old to understand and follow.
