Overview:
I was introduced to music early on by my parents. Being classically trained on the piano I started playing and writing songs at the tender age of seven. My early piano influences are Mozart, Beethoven and Gershwin amongst others. Growing up, I became even more influenced by Pop, R&B, Funk, and Rock artists from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Prince. As a teenager in high school, I performed recitals and played in rock bands, and picked up the guitar and drums to broaden my music repertoire.
EXPERIENCE
I relocated to New York City in 1992 to major in music at Hunter College. Living in NYC I began performing live and became a studio session musician in the process I developed songwriting and arranging skills as well as my own composing style. As I advanced musically I began teaching piano, guitar and music theory at the Academy of Music. Teaching the basics of piano really helped me develop a love for exploring and learning music with students . Gradually my taste in music evolved into different styles of music such as Jazz, Blues, Electronic and World Music.
METHODS USED
Traditional sight reading, ear training, technique, music theory and the basic fundamentals are essential for developing music abilities. I teach step by step and build slowly so the student learns discipline and also become well balanced in music vocabulary. The students starts off in lesson books with an assignment book to help with consistency with daily practice, as the students mature we can also play the "cool" songs! I teach students the mechanics of music and how to teach themselves so they are proficient in all music levels.
LESSON STYLE
Really good music teachers who work well with students of various temperaments and abilities are difficult to come by. My goal is to instill a sense of music appreciation, while at the same time teaching about the technical aspects of music and having realistic goals for my students. I feel qualified to teach music and to do so in a way that each student feels special, valued and encouraged. With my real world experience and unique style of teaching I believe I am an ideal musician to study with.
