Associate Degree: Cuyahoga Community College, Bachelor Degree: Toccoa Falls University, Course Work: Settlement School of Music
I have an associate degree in the arts, with emphasis in music. All throughout high school I studied, piano, voice and violin. I began private teaching on the violin when I was 16 years old and it was then, that I realized what a privilege it was to teach and watch my young summer students excel and then play in the youth orchestra at the end of the summer. This experience was so very rewarding and I knew that I wanted to teach music privately. Over the past 22 years, I have taught piano, violin and voice in my home studio, a community art center and at various churches in the area.
Over 175 students have come my way through the years. Many have stayed with me until they left for college. Other students have come to study and then go on to pick up and master more instruments. Some have graduated in music education, music performance and music therapy. I can't imagine a more rewarding job! Watching music skill develop in each one is my absolute highlight. I have many friendships develop as a result of music instruction that I am so grateful for. Music crosses all language barriers and all cultures. It is the one thing that every culture has in common. Music brings healing and joy to many people!
I am a teacher that advocates the necessity to understand music as well as instrument proficiency. Whatever instrument is chosen to learn, I do use curriculum series to accomplish before we move to student's choice of music. I feel that I would do a disservice to students if I also taught related to the instrument only. That being said, maintaining motivation and excitement is also very important to me! It is very important to practice the skills being taught, but it has to come from the student's desire alone!
Each student is unique, therefore listening and getting to the individual as well as their skill is critical. The first lesson or two may be spent just getting to know each other and give some minor music skill testing to help me understand skill level. From there, we move forward at the student's pace and abilities! When there is opportunity, my students have performed in recitals, contest and served in music at the churches in their schools. It is a wonderful and fulfilling joy to be a part of student's lives!
