I started piano lessons when I was very young and think all kids that are interested in lessons should be given the chance to see if they are ready. I cater my teaching to each individual student, because everyone is ready to start lessons at a different age, learns at a different rate, and experiences learning differently. I started teaching in my mother's piano studio as a teenager, had a fabulous pedagogy instructor at Oberlin, and continue exposing myself to new materials. As a result, I am familiar with numerous methods and teaching styles and can choose the books and approach that are right for each student. My ultimate teaching goals are to give students a firm foundation in music reading, to enjoy performing, and to work hard and be proud of their accomplishments.
I have over 25 years of performance experience, and over 15 years of teaching experience, both in private lessons and group performance/theory classes. I've taught students ages 4-adult, including music majors taking applied piano lessons at Oberlin Conservatory, and adjudicated a number of piano competitions. I’m particularly passionate about teaching smart, quirky, inquisitive kids. While I teach students ranging from absolute beginners through advanced/professional level repertoire, I get especially excited about working with kids early on in their musical development. Building technique and musical literacy from the ground up and seeing the lightbulbs go off along the way is one of my favorite aspects of teaching.
Beginning students start with a lesson book, theory book (written exercises for older students, coloring note naming exercises for younger students), and technique book that is appropriate for their age. As soon as a student is ready, I introduce them to books and sheet music written by other composers that make great recital pieces, and sometimes even compose pieces especially for them. I also add a classical piano literature book to the mix, and eventually drop the lesson book when the student has a good understanding of the fundamentals. If a student wants to work on any of their favorite tunes (e.g. movie, rock), we work on those in addition. I think students should work on anything that inspires them, while also developing their piano skills through standard repertoire.
My goal in lessons is to inspire my students to become the best musicians they can be while fostering a lifelong love of making music. My studio offers numerous performance opportunities throughout the year, some formal and some more casual, to give students goals to work toward and get them comfortable on the stage. Many of my students also participate in the Royal Conservatory of Music exams and events such as the Massachusetts Music Teachers Association Judged Festival. However, participation in these is completely optional. I fully believe that everyone can benefit from making and learning music, and tailor lessons to reflect each student's goals and aspirations.
