Music has always been a profound source of inspiration in my life, and I feel deeply that it has the power to heal the world. Keeping it alive through teaching and performing has been a great joy and privilege as I watch students grow and become enriched from the immense benefits that studying and playing music provides. I have had the good fortune to perform internationally with virtuoso musicians, and have been witness to the incredible healing powers of music by performing in non traditional settings such as hospitals and orphanages as well as onstage.
I have taught private flute intermittently for the past 25 years, usually traveling to students’ homes. I teach classical music as a foundation, while incorporating other types of music to keep it fun and interesting for the student. Many of my students have performed in recitals which I have organized, as well as in other performances that demand hard work and personal accomplishment. I have students from many different backgrounds and ages, and watching students grow from their musical endeavors and fall in love with music is one of the greatest achievements any teacher can have.
I usually start out using the Rubank Method, but I frequently incorporate some Suzuki and other ear training methods as well. I also like to use Trevor Wye’s books for more advanced students. I like to expose all students to a classical repertoire of performance pieces, using basics for beginners and progressing in difficulty as the student gains more control of the instrument. I use a variety of books with etudes, or studies, to give students a strong background in technique while also teaching various musical concepts such as theory and improvisation.
It is important for me to be aware of individual learning styles, so each lesson is tailored to each student’s needs. Often the goals for students depends on demands from school, so it is important to establish these based on school requirements as well as personal accomplishments the student may have. I use a lot of encouragement and positive feedback to help students stay motivated while at the same time introducing challenging material so that students feel inspired to excel. Most of all, I create a fun space to share the joy of making music!
