I’m a motivated teacher who likes working with students wanting to develop. I graduated from FDU Madison Nj with a B.A. degree in 1998. I’m primarily a self taught musician who has worked my way into being a professional. I have performed numerous times in Europe and for years as a sideman in jazz big bands, combos and r&b groups in the NYC metropolitan area. Some of the groups: The Spirit of Life Ensemble, the 747 Orchestra, Orchestras Soul, The Van Martin Orchestra ect…. I’ve also performed in off broadway productions of The Sound of Music and Oliver.
I began teaching trombone at Andy’s Music located in Livingston NJ in the early 2000’s and later private in home instruction. I give the tools for the student to become a better player and to build confidence. If the student is participating in the school’s music program I help them prepare for stage band performances or recitals. If the student is an adult I have a ton of sheet music covering classical, jazz, Latin and r&b styles. Students are much more likely to enjoy playing the trombone if they develop the technique to be able to express themselves.
I always have the student start by developing a practice routine consisting of long tones, flexibility exercises, scales and the different tonguing attacks; single, double, legato and staccato. Next perhaps finding out what their interest are so we can pick out the appropriate materials. I have etude material from Bach and Mozart, jazz material from Clifford Brown, Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, J.J. Johnson, Slide Hampton as well as r&b material from Earth Wind and Fire and James Brown. Also plenty of music from Basie and Ellington.
As stress free as possible allowing the student to progress at their own but steady pace. To set realistic goals based on their own ability in addition to the time they have to devote to the trombone. I may occasionally talk about other interest the student may outside of music such as football, baseball, tennis ect…. to keep the setting relaxed and comfortable. When students show effort I stay positive and give encouragement. When they make progress I give praise. I want them to understand that we’re in this together and that in some ways they’re teaching me too.
