I have been discovering my love for teaching for the last 5 years. I started within my undergrad school. I graduated from Western Carolina University in May 2015 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance (Classical) as well as a minor in Psychology. I was able to perform my first professional show with Asheville Lyric opera as a chorister in La Traviata in 2012. I trained with multiple professionals through the Crittenden Opera Workshop in Boston and The Torggler Institute in Newport News, VA. I am now finishing up my Master of Music in Vocal Performance (Classical) at New York University, as well as my Advance Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy, also through NYU. I will graduate in May of 2017 and looking forward to already having a full teaching schedule, as well as a lot of auditions.
My teaching started in my undergrad, about 5 years ago when I was required to take a Vocal Pedagogy class as part of my major. From there I fell in love with teaching. I was able to expand on my love as a substitute teacher at Rabun Gap Academy in Rabun Gap Georgia in 2012. There I taught five girls ranging from 8-15. I continued that until 2014, I then took on two colleagues, a girl who was 24 at the time and a guy who was 19 and taught them for a year. I experienced my major break through with teaching when I moved to New York City and started my job with NYU. My program has allowed me to teach as I have been learning more about the inner and outer workings of the voice and the body. Since starting ay NYU, I have had over 15 students every semester, Two of them returning for multiple semesters with me as their teacher.
I start with the basics on any level of singer just to get a feel for their voice. For children I like to utilize a lot of imagery to go along with making sounds first and then worrying about the correctness later. Training the ear in singing is very important and also learning about the body in terms of singing is key. I have a set regimen of warm ups for both men and women than I alternate depending on the students age and skill level. I have a lot of music at my disposal to help train my students from the very beginner level to the intermediate advance level. I believe in incorporating classical training to all types of music in order to train the healthiest of singers. Though I am a classical and Legit musical theatre singer by trade, I have knowledge in all works and genres of music and can easily adapt to the genre the student is wanting to focus on. I encourage my students to utilize my peers and colleague for can accompany for them during the lesson so that I can focus on the student and their voice and not worry about the piano on top. I have a list of people my students can use if necessary.
I work with the student and their needs. I don't want to jump too far ahead or go to slow , so I work with the student and figure out their speed to determine where we go each and every lesson. I believe in being honest with how you are feeling in that moment and encourage my students to utile those emotions for singing. I work with the student to make realistic goals but will push the students further and harder unless they tell me to bring it down. Their goals are important to me and as a teacher, its my job to see those goals met. I am very sympathetic and empathetic and probably the most understanding and Non-judgemental person one could ever meet. I welcome a challenge and I have no problem with any student or any problem. I am all about collaboration with that student.
