Hi there, my name is Cory and I teach drums and guitar! I am a musician, a teacher, and an audio engineer, which all greatly contribute to the success and progression I see in my students. I began playing the drums when I was just 10 years old, and they quickly became my first love in the world of playing and creating music. I took private lessons much like what I now offer my students for years until I began playing in bands and progressing on my own. My second instrument, guitar, came to me later when I turned 17. I wanted to be able to create my own songs, so in order to do so I felt as though I needed to be able to play the guitar along with the drums. For years now my skills in musicianship and song writing have helped students grow to become skilled and creative musicians!
I began teaching after graduating high school and have continued to do so ever since. During these years I attended college at California State University Chico, where I earned my Bachelor's degree as an audio engineer. This journey greatly helped me grow as a musician, teacher, leader, and engineer. Through out my college years I continued to play in bands both through my school and locally in our community, started my own business to help local musicians gain recognition and improve their skills, gained a new appreciation for musicianship and creativity through the eyes of an audio engineer, and of course taught my students to improve their musical abilities. Now my main focus is to help my students grow in the ways I have seen in myself grow over the years.
The first thing I do with all of my students is figure out what kind music they are passionate about. Knowing what my students musical tastes and goals are is extremely important so I can help get them to the place they are envisioning themselves. Once I have a general idea of what my student wants to learn I can tailor specific lessons that fit their ideas specifically. I find that this keeps students the most excited because they have a personal goal to strive for rather than trying to teach them something they are not interested in. I can make my lessons fun for all levels of players, and my students will see their skills develop quickly in the direction that THEY want to go. If a student is unsure where they see themselves going as a musician, that is perfectly ok too! When my students have yet to develop a library of music they like and don't have a sense of what they want to play I help them figure these things out which is extremely rewarding for the both of us.
Student teacher relationships are the most important part of teaching in my opinion. I have the skills to teach my students whatever they may want to learn, but in order for the best results, it is important to me that I build a relationship with my students much like a friendship. My students enjoy spending time with me, and as a result they are more driven and excited to learn from me. My lessons revolve around both skill and personality so that my students have a good time while they are learning to appreciate music on a deeper level. Whether my students want to learn the the intricate theory behind the delicate piece they are learning, or if they just want to be able to bang along with Bonham to their favorite Led Zeppelin record, I can get them to that level.
