Overview:
I am a passionate musician who has been playing an instrument for 16 years. In 2014, I graduated from Christopher Newport University with a Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Saxophone Performance. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to perform with many different groups encompassing a vast number of styles. I have been giving private lessons for about 5 years and I know the value of that one-on-one experience. I would love to share my love of music with anyone who is willing to give it a try!
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching while I was in college. I started working with a local high school band, where I was in charge of marching as well as the woodwinds. I would run woodwind sectionals and from those students, I gain private students. I have given lessons on flute, saxophone, and clarinet. I like to reinforce what is happening in classroom as well as enrich their music experience with supplemental materials. A student needs to be motivated to practice and I have found that adding a little popular music to the lessons help.
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has a solid foundation on fundamentals, I begin to increase the rigor of the work. Each student is different, so I try to personalize their lessons. I like for every student to have at least one solo piece to be working on. I always encourage the student to work towards a recital or even a simple solo performance in their own home. The more you perform in front of other people, the better you get. I also like to play duets with the students because I find that it helps with counting as well as increases confidence.
LESSON STYLE
I love seeing my students set and reach goals. I make sure that realistic goals are set and that I show the student the steps to reach those goals. If a student does not feel successful, then they are more likely to not practice as much or quit all together. I want my students to feel excited about music and want to practice. I try to find out what motivates and inspires each student in order to tailor my teaching to each individual. I always try to produce an environment where it is alright to make mistakes, but we are going to bounce back and find a way to reach our goal.
