Overview:
I'm an experienced performer and private instructor. I graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies/Performance. I have had the privilege to perform with the top EIU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo with legendary guest artists such as Jason Marsalis, Vanessa Rubin, and Andy Martin. I have experience in performing different styles of music such as jazz, jazz fusion, rock, funk, and blues. I own two drum sets that are set up in my home so lessons are as efficient as possible. One drum set is a 6 piece DW Collectors Series and the other is a 4 piece Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz kit. I use mostly Meinl cymbals with some Zildjian and Bosphorus mixed in.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching private drum set lessons during my first year as an Eastern Illinois University student. I taught lessons for just about three years while in college. At one point, I had about 14 students to teach and fit into my busy schedule. I've learned a lot from that experience and now know how to manage time efficiently with a heavy teaching load. Teaching is a very rewarding experience especially when I can see the progress in my student's performance. That rewarding feeling is what I teach for.
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I like to start with the basic fundamentals of holding the drum sticks properly and how to set up the drum set so its comfortable for the student. Every body type is different and its important to start with that. Then we would move on to learning the basics of different styles and then move on to reading music from method books. With adult students, I find out what they are interested in and work towards their goals. If i find that there are basic techniques that need to be improved, we will work on improving them.
LESSON STYLE
It is very rewarding to see my students develop a passion for music and excel at their craft. Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, i can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs.
