I began piano playing at age three, lessons from college faculty at age six, organ lessons at age thirteen and began coaching with my future major teacher at age fifteen. I gave my first New York City solo recital while still in High School and my first accompanying and solo performance at The National Cathedral in High School, and graduated a year early making up four credits the summer after grade 11. I played at Westminster Abbey and many other New York venues before turning 20. My family was not wealthy, nor musically connected. It came from deep inside me
My teaching experience both private and classroom 1-8 at the Bishop Noland Epicopal Day School in Lake Charles Louisiana before earning a Master's degree at Yale. I must admit that when I hit age forty I felt I was an expert, more or less. An opportunity presented itself at age 45 for me to study for at least 20 hours of instruction with a member if the faculty of the Hohschule fur Musik in Franckfurt who also served as Organist Titulaire at Saint Sulpice in Paris. In February I flew to Dallas to hear him and receive personal copies of his new memoirs and organ method.
I have been teaching Music 1922 at Northeast Community College in organ and piano since Fall Semester 2016. I enjoy beginners as there are no bad habits to break! I have coached singers who have gone on to Peabody, Choral conducting degrees and professional engagements on cruise ships and Broadway (Manoel Felciano who was a choir member for four years while a Yale undergrad). I emohasize sharing goals with parents: in the past 48 hours I said to my new neighbors whose children study piano, that even if they switch later to another instrument, a good foundation in reading treble and bass cleff and reading notation will be in place.
I adapt my style, while incorporating the basics. A teacher at Juilliard, the late Mary Anthony Cox said she never taught two classes the same, as they consist of unique personalities. Many times it is necessary to find what the students psychological motivation for learning an instrument and aptitude for music is. I dont think saying that it requires dedication, alot of time and repitition, and a burning desire to accomplish goals. But the effort is well worth it if they have a vocation as a musician, or want to be able to appreciate different genres more fully.
