I also have decades of experience with songwriting. Not only can I teach you the mechanics of music and composition, I can teach you the heart and soul of the songwriting process, making you an expert on what it takes to create and be creative musically.
I started playing guitar at 13 years old, way back in 1996. I taught myself for about 5 years before taking up lessons. I studied classical and jazz under Danny Smith, a student of Andres Segovia who is a famous classical guitarist. I love all types of music and over the years I have played in jazz, rock, blues, metal, punk, folk, and country bands. I love to teach and spread the joy of music to anyone who is interested. I can't express how much music can enrich your life and nothing makes me happier than sharing that with others.
For beginners, I start with chord study. I like to incorporate teaching songs the student is interested in. This keeps students engaged and gives them something they'll look forward to practice. Once a basic understanding of chords is achieved, I move on the notes on the fretboard and music patterns and intervals to help gain an understanding of how the guitar works. Then we move on to the CAGED system along with scales and modes, all the while teaching the student songs they pick that incorporate the techniques they are learning, I'm order to keep them engaged and give them something to share and mark their progress.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. While there is definitely a strong element of hard work involved, I believe students will be more likely to put in that work if they enjoy it and it is tied to something they want to do anyway.
