Overview:
I am a passionate instructor who enjoys working with students. I graduated from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2014 with a degree in Music Performance and Music Business. Since then I have been living in the Boston area performing, writing, and recording with other area artists. When I was younger I had started my percussion journey with marching drums, and to this day I still have a great deal of passion for the musical style. I then started to teach other areas of drumming like drum set and mallet percussion and other auxiliary instruments. Today I am fortunate to play with several different rock and alternative groups as well as some chamber and specialty ensembles that require me to stay sharp and well practiced.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching in 2009 while I was attending the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
While I was a student I began to study with some truly great musicians who really helped me realize my potential. I got some jobs teaching area high school drumlines and marching bands and really enjoyed the experience. When I first started playing I was mostly interested in marching bands and drumlines. I marched multiple seasons with the Boston University Winter Percussion Ensemble while in high school and then held the center snare position with the Spartans Drum and Bugle Corps.. It was these experiences that prepared me to play for the New England Patriots Drumline during the 2015 season in front of sold out stadium crowds.
METHODS USED
I believe the proper technique is essential in order to be a successful percussionist. We would start by how to hold the stick properly, whether it be matched grip or traditional grip. From there we would move on to how to properly hit the drum and bounce the stick. The first few lessons are usually all about technique and approach and we would mainly stay on one drum or surface, but after that we would move to the drumset or another area that interests the student. I also believe it is important to know how to read and understand written music so I have several books that I like to work out of that start with easy rhythms that gradually become more complex at a rate that is not overwhelming.
LESSON STYLE
I am an easy going person and I like to teach with a laid back style. I understand that not all students learn the at the same pace which is why I bring an individual approach to all of my students. I like to bring in different ideas and listen to different examples of rhythms and genres and really break down how each one works so that I may be able to find another way to make a groove not only fit into and example, but feel like it was made for that moment. I consider myself a versatile player and teacher and I strive to pass on as much of my musical knowledge as I can.
