A flute teacher in Colorado Springs who delights in being a part of my students' musical journeys, I have over forty years' teaching and performing experience in the United States, Germany, and Norway. I have my Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance and performed as a part of U.S. Army Bands. Over the years I have taught in music stores, band rooms, community centers, and my home studio. Students have shown accelerated progress in tone, musicianship, and technique; consistently placed in All-County, -District, and -State Honor Bands and Orchestras; been awarded superior ratings in Solo and Ensemble Festivals; and enjoyed the weekly interaction with a trusted adult who listens and genuinely cares about each individual student.
I work with all ability levels, but my strength (and joy!) is engaging with beginner and intermediate flutists. I approach teaching from the "whole child" level. I recognize that you are not just a flute student; you are also an individual with a family, friends, school, sports, clubs, and other commitments. I love to be a part of your creating, experiencing, and sharing music. But being a part of the growth of your self-confidence and maturity is also an important element of the delightful journey.
I've helped new beginner students start their flute exploration with the correct embouchure, posture, and technique right from the beginning. I've worked with students who have been on their own for a while, helping to correct any bad habits that had snuck in. I've helped students reinforce the technical basics of scales, daily exercises, breathing, and long tones so that their music soars. I've helped students with specific solos and band music so that a future performance is as close to perfect as possible.
How can I help you?
Briefly: The flute teaching methods and books I use vary and are based on the needs of a student. As a student advances, I also include music theory and basic ear training.
A little more in-depth: As many students have begun their flute studies in their elementary school band, I look over the books and music they have been playing from in school, listen to their sound and technique, watch their posture, and make a decision on teaching books to expand and enhance their current level.
For the intermediate level student, I follow the same path but also include daily exercises, methods, and solos and ensembles.
For a more advanced student, depending on the general direction a student wishes to go with their music, I'll include more advanced method books, etudes, exercises, solos, and ensembles.
I have an extensive flute sheet music library from which more advanced students can borrow.
My "teaching style" has evolved over the many years that I have been working with flute students. I am very relaxed. I want you to look forward to and have a good time in our lessons! In that way I know you are enjoying your music.
I observe and listen to understand the complete child/young adult before me. I expect regular practice on lesson material, but I also understand the occasional week when other aspects of your life have interfered.
I truly appreciate hearing the joy you share with me when - because of YOUR work and dedication - you make that first real sound on the flute, or conquer a tricky passage in a solo, or move up a chair in your middle school band, or are accepted into the All-State band.
THAT is why I teach, and achieving that is the foundation of my teaching style.
