I am a passionate and motivated instructor who loves sharing my love of music. I have been teaching piano for more than 20 years and I have a weekly music group for young children. I love music and I love teaching music. My favorite part of teaching is the “ah ha!” moment. The moment when a student has been working on something; a scale, a piece of music, anything, and they finally get it. They have that moment of “Oh! I get it!” I have a bachelors of science in fine arts with a concentration in music from Long Island University, C.W. Post campus. I play piano and guitar and I sing. I also write my own songs for my music group.
I am also a registered behavior technician and use my aba experience when working with young children and students with special needs
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching when I was 18. My piano teacher taught me how to teach and trained me. My favorite thing about teaching has always been that moment when a student finally “gets” something he/she has been working on. I also love the challenge of individualizing my lessons to fit each students interests and abilities. I have a background working with children with autism and related disabilities so individualizing and improvising is so important. We all march to the beat of our own drum. My job as a teacher isn’t to teach my students how to play my song, but help them find and play their own.
METHODS USED
I always begin with an interview to get a feel for the student’s level and interest. I start out with basics; musical alphabet, finding keys in the piano, finger numbers, listening. The method books I prefer are the Music Tree series, the Schaum series, Bastien notecards and i have recently began looking into Piano Pronto. I like to keep my lessons instructional and fun so I welcome any books or sheet music the student would like to work on. I also utilize online resources whenever necessary. I always have a plan and a destination, but my student holds the map. So I am always ready to go with their flow.
LESSON STYLE
As I’ve said above, as a teacher, I live for the “ah ha” moment. When a student is working on something, particularly something challenging, and they finally “get” it. Whether it’s a scale, a favorite song, a technique exercise, or a complex piece of music, there’s that moment. The moment it comes together and makes sense. It suddenly “clicks”. The pride and happiness and sense of accomplishment in this “Oh!” or “ah ha” moments is all over their faces. I love that. I strive for that with all of my students. Music is an adventure, one my students and I are taking together. I know where I want to take them, but they have the map. It’s always exciting to navigate the twists and turns and experience the adventure together.
